4 Ways to Curb Anxiety In Your Child

Children just as adults tend to have varying personalities - personalities which are still in the early stages of formation. While some children easily deal with new situations and challenges, others can be prone to anxiety. If they do not learn to cope with it early, their condition will act as a mental handicap in their future daily life stopping them from a number of activities. If you observe your child being extra cautious or anxious about normal situations, you can always try to help them through these four methods mentioned below. Let Your Child Face His/Her Fears This can either be empowering or terrifying for your child, in the ways he/she handles the given tasks. Give your child enough emotional support and help that they trust you and become ready to work through their fears. Start with small activities in whichever domain he/she usually gets nervous. Get him/her habituated with it until such activities or situations become normal. Always have a safe word so you both know when to stop in cases of emergency. Asses the progress and make variations if necessary. A child who has worked through his/her fears will get a huge confidence boost. Practice Deep Breathing Together The quickest way to calm down an excited or a fearful child is to practice breathing techniques. For starters you can just ask him/her to breathe in and breathe out with you slowly. You can do this for a few minutes until the child is fully relaxed. Apart from that you can make it a part of his/her daily routine to practice breathing techniques with you. This will normalise blood pressure and stress levels if done regularly. You can even go a few steps forward and introduce new techniques of meditation and mindfulness to your child if he/she shows further interest. Offer a Fun Reward You can always repackage work/situations as fun activities - activities which you both do together and as a bonus your child gets a small reward. This will make him/her look forward to those sessions rather than being fearful and anxious. Often anxieties have roots in negative experiences with a situation. If you can make such experiences positive and fun for him/her, you can change the outlook and eliminate anxiety.
